How I Cull Quickly in Lightroom

Culling sessions and weddings can be very overwhelming, but I have worked really hard to make my culling workflow quick and easy. I, personally, use Lightroom because I already pay for it with my Adobe subscription but I have heard amazing things about Photo Mechanic and AI culling softwares, such as AfterShoot and recommend it if culling is a big time waster in your editing workflow. Today, I will be talking about my workflow in LR and how I cull a 1 hour session in under 20 minutes.

  1. Use the Library Mode
Library mode uses previews instead of full size images, so they load quicker in library mode. I use full screen to be able to see the images better.
  2. Mark Keepers as 1 Star
I, personally, use 1 star (shortcut is 1) instead of flags or colors since I use stars for rating my preview images and the placement works best for my hands.
  3. Multiple Run Throughs
1st run through I go on gut. Keep as many as you want, but go as fast as you possibly can.
2nd run through – I eliminate duplicates and check group photos more closely for eyes open and silly expressions. I mark them down do 0 stars (shortcut is 0).
3rd run through – not always necessary but helpful to get rid of any duplicates I missed.
  4. Wedding Tip
For weddings, I keyword the images into different sections. Different sections can help with attention span and helps me from feeling overwhelmed. I start with my least favorite sections to cull and work to my favorite section. It’s like a reward.
These are the sections I use: getting ready/details, bride & groom, wedding party, family, ceremony, reception
