Creative Control while Outsourcing – Nicole Marie Photography

Creative Control while Outsourcing

Something I hear a lot when people are starting to consider outsourcing their editing is this: “I want to outsource my editing but I want creative control.”

As an artist, it can be hard to give up any control. After all, if you’re outsourcing this, doesn’t it somehow stop being “yours”? So step one, let’s talk about mindset. There are plenty of artistic endeavors that use more than just one person. A movie can be a fantastic work of art, and that art is shaped through the vision of a director. But a director who can’t outsource any part of the production process will produce no good movies. An architect might have a tremendous artistic vision for a building, but without outsourcing, it will never be built. Mindset shift: Just because you didn’t physically do every stage of a project doesn’t make it less your artistic vision. Outsourcing your editing does not have to mean giving up your unique style and control.Practically speaking, let’s talk about my process for helping you outsource your problems, not your creativity.

  1. Sample Gallery
Some editors are just going to be a better fit for you than others. I use a sample gallery to help you understand the process and to make sure I am a good fit for your needs. Typically, you send about 20-25 photos.
  2. Anchor Images
An anchor image is an image that you have edited (I ask for one for every lighting scenario) that is used to match other photos in your gallery. This is the key to your photos matching your style and vision. You edit 1 photo in a particular lighting situation so that I can match the rest of the photos to your unique vision for the shoot. Anchor Images are the trick to a perfectly matched gallery.
  3. Feedback
An editor is a relationship. And like any good relationship, the secret is communication. I check-up with you via email to get feedback on how I can tweak future edits to get that perfect fit to your vision.
